...reduce the morbidity associated with jaundice and dehydration...

...convenient and comfortable...

I believe patients would love to have the option of having an OB professional care giver come to their home for a follow-up visit. It may increase their sense of security, and it would be convenient and comfortable to be able to have this care in their home.

– Vicki Lemmon, RN
Director of Family Birth Center, Boulder Community Hospital Foothills Campus

Q: Who would benefit from a professional postpartum home visit?

A: We believe that every family bringing home a new baby can benefit from one or more of our visits. Because every birth and every baby is different, even experienced moms often need further evaluation or assistance after discharge from the hospital. First-time moms often have questions, health needs, or breastfeeding issues for which a professional home visit is particularly beneficial.

Q: Do you see the mom or the baby or both?

A: The new mom or her baby can have individual exams to follow-up on particular concerns, but we highly recommend that both be seen. They continue to be an intricate duo, and education can be provided for the family unit as well.

Q: Are your visits covered by insurance?

A: Our visits are typically covered by insurance, especially if they are requested by your physician. Reimbursement depends on your particular coverage, so check with your insurance provider. Payment is expected at the time of the visit, and a superbill will be provided to submit to your insurance company. Remember to ask both your obstetric provider and the baby’s provider for referrals in order to get reimbursement for both visits.

Q: How do your services differ from those of a postpartum doula?

A: Boulder is fortunate to have an excellent community of doulas, some of whom do postpartum care. A visit from a doula postpartum typically focuses on direct physical and emotional care of the mother and her infant, often including light housekeeping, laundry, and cooking, as well as massage and other nurturing activities.

Our visits are directed at making a professional physical assessment of the mother’s postpartum status and the baby’s transition to extra-uterine life. We are capable of doing a comprehensive physical exam of both mom and baby, providing counseling for common concerns during this vulnerable period, monitoring for common postpartum and infant problems, evaluating and supporting breastfeeding, making referrals when necessary, and giving the new family access to a multitude of community resources for ongoing support.
